The anticipation of winter sports, fun and activities is nearly boiling over here in Central Oregon. Mt. Bachelor is making daily announcements about their opening plans, snowmobiles being tuned and fired up, ice skates sharpened and the final touches on the Winter Brews from our local breweries are being made. This does not even take into consideration the Turkeys being prepped, the Christmas lights are being hung and the warmth of the holiday season building.
Central Oregon is simply a winter wonderland and we are fortunate to have so many things for people to do and enjoy here. Sled dog rides and horse drawn sleighs can’t be found just anywhere! One of my favorite events of the year is the “Grand Illumination” at the Lodge in Sunriver. It is one of the nicest family events a person can attend. They do an amazing job kicking off the holiday season with tens of thousands of lights coming on at the same time in the crisp winter air. The carolers and fireworks really bring this event together in a very special way. It almost feels as though you are at a Disneyland parade, on a slightly smaller scale.
Each year we have the Bend Winterfest on a weekend in February that is a TON of fun. I just heard the other day that the Oregon Tourism Commission is going to be changing this to the OREGON Winterfest and they are looking at making it an entire month of events and activities. The Amphitheater has even hopped on board and the music will now be performed at Les Schwab Amphitheater instead of on a smaller set up stage in the parking lot. This will be very cool because it will bring tourists from all over Oregon and make this already huge event even bigger!
There are so many things to do and see here in Central Oregon during the winter, that it is difficult to try to capture it all. You just have to come over and experience it for yourself. Of all the fun things to do and see, the VERY BEST part of winter in Central Oregon is this one little thing that we have on this side of the mountains…and it is called SUNSHINE! When you have had enough of the gray, cloudy, rainy, wet days of Western Oregon, just come on over the hill and get away from for several days to Sunriver and Central Oregon… and if you need a place to stay, check out our great Sunriver Vacation Rentals.
